Years in business: less than 1

Bio:
I’m Stephanie Guimond, artist, visionary and avid left-brainer. I paint, I dream big and I love spreadsheets.

In 2008 I picked up a paint brush for the first time since kindergarten and haven’t put it down since. My art, like myself, varies in style and personality from the vintage girly to the unexplainable abstract. The most common theme is visibly the feminine, but I’m always exploring…

Working with materials like acrylics, paper, pastels and ink, I’m drawn to an intuitive and fluid approach to painting where images appear organically before being polished into a finished product. Because of this intuitive nature, pieces are heavily influenced by what I’m living the week, the day or the moment they are created. They reflect a personal story that in an odd way infuses them with a universal quality.

I share my home with hubby and Cassie, our Golden Retriever. I left my 9–5 job last fall to try something different, and spend most of my days working in my guest bedroom turned office/studio creating art and other paid work that supports the life I want to create overall.

I am grateful for the opportunity.

current projects: a new Website, growing my business with a new left-brain offering called Get Clear, Get Moving (coming soon!)learning to balance it all in my own way

At this moment, what one idea do you need to start executing for your business?

I am going to cheat and mention two ideas, but they’re very closely related, I promise!

IDEA #1
I’ve already started executing this idea, it’s a matter of moving it forward. I’ve recently worked with (very brave!) beta clients offering Get Clear, Get Moving planning & goal setting consultation packages. There are several formats available to me in sharing this content and these offerings, each one with its relative pricing and potential income. A key next step in my business is to figure out which format to launch first and do it.

IDEA #2
I want to publish a foundational information product that would become an entry way into my brand and business (consultation services in this case, not art). The intention of this product is to offer a solution to a problem while “teaching” potential clients about my core philosophy and what they need to know before going further with me. I gleaned the concept from Tara Gentile. Her foundational product is The Art of Earning which deals with her money philosophy (that making money should be beautiful) and helps new readers work through money issues before working further with her, therefore attracting people into more advanced programs who are already aligned with her views.

Laura is a marketing professional, graphic designer, writer and lover of all things creative living her best life in Charleston, SC.  On most days, you will find Laura sharing her artful adventures at LauraCatherine.co, as well as helpful online tutorials, app reviews and design bits of goodness on her MarketingWithLaura.com blog.

Blogging about online marketing has provided Laura an outlet to share much of what she has learned through her years in the online tourism and television markets.  Her online marketing journey began in 2005, when she was internet marketing director for her local tourism bureau — when social media was emerging. She also worked in internet sales/marketing for a top NBC station in South Carolina, whose website drew more than 500,000 visitors a month.

In 2010, Laura signed up for Kelly Rae Roberts “Flying Lessons” e-course.  She immersed herself into artistic pursuits away from the computer and shares her progress with her readers at LauraCatherine.co.

Laura enjoys art journaling, painting, tweeting, making jewelry, traveling and (of course) blogging. She has been known to hold a craft tweet-up and loves handmade items.

At this moment, what one idea do you need to start executing for your business?

So difficult to choose just one idea! It’s a tie between my need to start charging what I’m worth and my desire to create more personal/artful time for myself to recharge.

Making time for artful adventures every day is something I’ve started the summer out with more intentionally…whether that means taking a walk through the garden, snapping instagram photos for inspiration, playing in my art journal, or putting a brush to canvas.

I had dreams of an art studio space and they recently came to life, so I have more room to spread out my supplies and have fun.  I’ve been painting on bigger canvases with new techniques.  Time over at Kelly’s studio playing in paint and mixed media have also been a part of my summer so far. Kelly and I met through Flying Lessons, and having an artsy friend in the area has been such a blessing.

Charging what I’m worth can be a tough one, but being more selective about the projects I take on and quoting a more realistic number in terms of time investment has helped me to make great progress in this area as well. When I feel tempted to undercharge, I think about my family and the fact that I am shortchanging all of us, not just myself.

Funny thing is, the more time I take for myself in terms of art and journaling; the more confident I am in business.  Knowing one’s worth is always the first step!

recently i had the good fortune to attend a workshop with ken bova, an incredible artist and professor..while there were MANY takeaways, two in particular took hold of me in an unshakable have to act on right now kind of way…the first was the importance of cultivating community and the second was action, more specifically work produces work so get going…for me these two items dovetailed in a way that became crystal clear i needed to curate a national art show {nothing like jumping into the deep end, right?!} so as the notion marinated i reached out to my favorite group of creative dreamers and schemers, my flying lessons classmates, and posed the question…um whose in? and with a resounding YES a show is born:

taking flight: a curated collection of amazing creatives

so now the work of producing work begins and the tiny seed of thought is blooming brightly…so keep your eyes peeled and get ready for a show that will knock your socks off…a beautiful narrative of community, creativity and love with the common theme of growing our wings mid flight and soaring high!

whether it’s the great weather, the kickoff to show season, or the creative kick in the tush i got from an amazing workshop this weekend; i am cleaning up my site, updating content and cannot wait to participate in the 10 10 10 project & blog hop coming very soon!  so if you have a chance poke around check out the changes and let me know what you think…xo dani

Meet {dani keith designs} ~

{dani keith designs} is a modern metalsmith studio based in North Carolina. Dani creates edgy, geometric jewelry for women ~ designs that are dynamic and truly striking!

Personally, I’m really loving the copper designs that have been lacquered, textured and patinated in various vibrant colors!”

so so excited about this feature, thanks again to the fine people of indie spotting

the {dk} family has grown a lot in the past year, in many many ways…in that growing a notion was borne for my work, the idea of milestones and celebrating moments that are so sacred to each of us and how as an artisan representing that day, moment or memory is an honor and a challenge…

modern engagement

inspired by my own ten year anniversary to my sweet david, the first of my modern wedding band collection began, the idea of making something so simple as a band contain all the emotion and love that this would represent at first had my head spinning.…but then the simplicity of love and the honesty of two people that connect that love shone through.…

modern wedding bands

we have also added nephews to the family, 2 to be exact and in their honor my version of mothers pendants was created…using the warmth of metal and the beauty of set stones these pendants are not the obvious examples of motherhood, they are very modern interpretation.

modern family pendant

what started as individual projects have quickly become  a collection that is both minimalist and modern and very {dk}

so one of my major new year’s resolutions was to increase the number of venue’s that carry my {dani keith designs}…and if i am painfully honest, this task is daunting, scary and well pretty much a guaranteed exercise in rejection, but none the less in order to grow we much venture out into the world and if it wasn’t scary it wouldn’t be worth doing…so with gumption and gusto and my protective armor i submitted my work…now i sent the pitch email to two boutiques on a saturday evening fully anticipating that i would be waiting at least 2 weeks for a response…GOOD or BAD, but then the unimaginable occurred, i heard  back from both boutiques almost immediately and both said YES!!

this was aMaZing and so exciting…but ah wait a second, am i ready to send the stock?  i was so sure that there was going to be a prolonged waiting period followed by an eventual rejection that i just sent requests out into the universe without fully being prepared to fill an order. this is something i think we creatives all struggle with, putting our passion out in the open for all to see and well accept makes us well freak out…the work a creative produces is in small or large a part of the artist themselves and rejection of the object is in fact a direct rejection of the person…but, BUT acceptance is well a little off putting…they really want my stuff?

so the moral of this tale is this…believe in your work so that others will, and when you take your baby steps out into the world be prepared to soar and not crash and burn, because chances are ‘you will succeed 98 and 9/10 percent guaranteed, except when you don’t’ {thank you Dr. Seuss}

it began with the promise of love, good examples set by our families so that we knew what love should be…and then there was a boy and a girl who knew when they met, their happily ever after was about to begin…in the middle there was romance, adventure, lots of moving around and most of all there was love… after 10 years he is my best friend, my partner in everything, and the best time i have ever had, he is my husband, my david and i can’t wait to see what the next 10, 20, 50 years has in store

with all my heart and all that i am…i love you

as it is a new year, its important to start off with flash, a little razzle dazzle.…{dani keith designs} is so incredibly honored to have side yard studios shoot my 2012 winter/spring lookbook.… it’s big doings for a little {dk} and i am so excited for this year, for its potential growth, for its challenges and for all of its beautiful fireworks!
via pinterest

2011 was a year full of change, we grew the biz, we moved (again) we grew our family {nephew jazz & nephew henry} and we are settling in…looking forward to 2012 and i have chosen my word for this year and that word is abundance! i am going to focus on this concept, far more than a resolution i want this word to fuel my impulses, nurture my creativity, strengthen my family and support my business endeavors…i used to aspire to grace and that is still a work in progress, while abundance is something i can TOTALLY achieve this year.…i hope!

so here’s to the new year as i bid adieu to the last ~ i am grateful for my lessons learned, prayers answered, new friends made and miracles witnessed as equally as i am glad to leave behind tears shed, purple pain felt, and bone quaking fear…in all things there is balance in that i am sure…happiest of new years to you and yours
